Automated Speed Enforcement

Town of Upper Marlboro Photo Enforcement Program

In accordance  with the Maryland Code 21-809 - Speed Monitoring Systems, specifically 21-809 (b)(1)(vi) 1. detailing the procedures for submissions related to highways in a Residential District, in Prince Georges County. The posted speed limit within the Town is 25 mph.

The Town of Upper Marlboro has, through the approval of Ordinances 2018-02 and 2021-06 enacted  the required legislation to allow for the installation of Automated Speed Enforcement units within the Town.  Ordinance  2018-02 was enacted in February 2018,  focusing on intersection red-light cameras  and speed enforcement in defined school zones. Ordinance 2021-06, enacted in November 2021 amended  Ordinance  2018-02 to  allow  automated  speed enforcement in Residential Districts.

The Upper Marlboro implementation phase of the Speed & Red-Light camera program within the Town limits starts on June 14, 2022. Violators traveling 12 mph miles or more over the posted speed limit will activate the speed camera which will result in a violation notice being issued and mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle. The fine for violating the posted speed limit is $40.00. Violators who fail to stop at a red light will activate the camera which will result in a violation notice being issued and mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle. The Maryland State Traffic Light Law states that if there are no signs prohibiting it, you may make a right turn on red AFTER a full and complete stop—not a hesitation or a slow roll—before the white traffic control or intersection line (not the crosswalk lines), after which you may proceed with caution. The fine for violating the red-light camera is $75.00. The 30-day warning period for the Speed & Red-Light camera program starts on May 13, 2022 and ends on June 13, 2022. On June 14, 2022, violators will be issued fines.
