Named after the first Duke
of Marlborough, the Town was established as a port town for tobacco
ships in 1706 when the western branch of the Patuxent River was still
navigable. The Town has been Prince George?s County seat since 1721.
Twenty-nine years later, horse racing came to Upper Marlborough and
attracted many people from the surrounding area. The remaining historic
homes reflect the grace and beauty for which the Town was known in its
social and commercial heyday.
Over the past 300 years,
changing economics have changed the face of the Town. The fields of
tobacco that once dominated the countryside have given way to
residential and commercial developments. The hustle and bustle of
farmers and traders has been replaced by a growing government that
includes the County Administration Building, Courthouse, Park & Planning and Board of
Education activities by
day, retiring into a quiet provincial town by night.

Retention of that small
town atmosphere in the 21st century is a continuing resolve of the 650+
residents and Town Commissioners as they strive to meet the challenges
presented by balancing the modern pressures of governmental,
residential and commercial development with sustainable economic
growth and historical preservation and appreciation while at the
same time providing professional Town services to stakeholders.
New welcome signs grace the Town's four entrances.
