Driver Charged in Crash that Damaged Downtown Upper Marlboro Historical Property

The Town of Upper Marlboro Police Department has completed its investigation of an incident which occurred at roughly 10pm on Monday November 26, 2018. A vehicle exited the roadway at a high rate of speed at the intersection of Governor Oden Bowie Drive and Elm Street, located in the downtown area of Upper Marlboro. The vehicle struck and damaged a county-owned vacant historic property (Old Marlboro Primary School).

The Town of Upper Marlboro Police Department has charged Mr. Alvin Elmore Courtney III of Brandywine with the following:  1) Failure to Control Speed to Avoid a Collision, 2) Negligent Driving, 3) Failure of Driver to Report an Accident to the Police, and 4) Failure of Driver to Report an Accident Involving Property Damage. Since the damaged building is county-owned, additional charges may possibly be filed by Prince George’s County Police.

The county has since secured and stabilized the historic structure. The damaged structure was a local primary school constructed in 1896. Noteworthy for the role it played in education, the Old Marlboro Primary School is most significant for the role it played in the early years of public education for girls in Prince George’s County.
